Nine months ago I was not only new to the Arts Council and the Hartford area but to Connecticut. Born and raised in New Hampshire, I had never lived outside of the 603. I didn’t quite know what to expect but quickly discovered, even in your late 20’s it’s tough being the “new kid in town.”
For both my work and my sanity, I chose to immerse myself in the arts and cultural scene in the greater Hartford area. Plays, exhibits, tours, you name it, I attended it. Always a lover of theater, history and art I was actually overwhelmed by everything this area has to offer. Museum After Dark at the New Britain Museum of American Art or check out the new show playing at TheaterWorks? What’s a girl to do?! Through the long winter months, not only did I end up having a have a blast, but I met some pretty fantastic people. When it comes to the arts/cultural scene, Hartford definitely HAS it.
All of this “research” helped me with one of the first projects I was tasked with at the Arts Council: forming an arts based young professional group. Not wanting to assume we’re experts, we held our first kick-off cocktail reception in May for the sole purpose of finding out what people want out of joining such a group and continued the conversation at a meet up at Jazz in the Park in July. With new knowledge and a new name, this month we’re ready to officially launch CANvas. Included in a $60 a year membership ($5 a month!) new members will receive a Let’s GO Arts! card, a pair of snazzy sunglasses and a comprehensive events calendar for local happenings and invites including free/discounted events through our wonderful partner organizations.
Over the course of the next year we aim to not only spread awareness about all of the amazing local organizations and events going on and have some fun, but to also create relationships and friendships with individuals you might not have met otherwise. Meeting new people and networking can be daunting, but through arts based activities and events, we hope to unite young adults through a shared love of the arts.
The official launch of CANvas is scheduled for Thursday September 18th from 5:30-7:30 at the Governor’s Residence. Members will enjoy cocktails, light hors d’oeuvres, tours of the sculpture garden and mixing and mingling. For any questions or to RSVP for the launch event, please contact Emily (me!) at 860-525-8629 ext. 236 or Eauger@LetsGoArts.org. (RSVP by September 12th is required.) Hope you see you there!
